World Book Day 2016 - Elmer

I have some really fond memories of World Book Day from when I was at school.  At the primary school I went to, we always had a fancy dress day to celebrate World Book Day- over the years I dressed up as lots of different things!  I remember dressing up as Cinderella, The Little Match Girl and as Dumbo!  In the afternoon, all of the pupils from my school would get on a coach and go on a trip to the local bookshop.  We would have our £1 book tokens in hand and could go in and choose any book we wanted- it was wonderful!

Now, many years later, I still love World Book Day! Reading is such a vital life skill, and I love that children are encouraged to read for pleasure!

Here at The SLT Scrapbook, as a way to get involved with World Book Day, we have created our very first Book Companion for one of our favourite children's books- Elmer!

To celebrate World Book Day & the fact this is our very first Book Companion, we have made it FREE for the first 24 hours!!  (PLEASE NOTE: This offer has now expired; this product is available to buy from our Teachers Pay Teachers store here

We wanted to give you a peek at what's inside this Book Companion- it contains 25 pages (including answer pages), they're all no prep, so you can just print and go!

The first page is just a simple summary page all about the book, great as an introductory activity!

The book is full of some wonderful vocabulary and there are many learning opportunities available.  We have created a few worksheets/activities that can be used alongside the book.

This activity aims to help students with learning some of the vocabulary included in the story.  Students need to cut out the squares from both pages and then pair up the word and the definition. They can then glue them into their own workbook or onto a new piece of paper.

For some of the other vocabulary, we have included a dictionary page where students can make a note of all of the words they didn't know and then they can use a dictionary to find the definition.

and we have also included an activity for sorting nouns, verbs and adjectives from the story too!

The story is great to sequence and retell. We have included two different activities to help with sequencing of the story.

We have included 3 pages where students can write about what happened at the beginning, middle and the end of the story, and we have included an activity where students need to cut out 6 images and put them into the right order:

We've included a range of other activities too that can be used alongside the book- from book reviews, labelling Elmer, answering comprehension questions and thinking about the characters' feelings:

Lots of other pages and activities are included too!

Another really great thing about this pack, is that we have included two versions in the download- one with UK/AUS English spellings and one with US English spellings!  We wanted to include both in one handy download, so that it's more convenient for teachers and therapists all over the globe!

We hope you like this pack and have a really fun World Book Day.  We'd love to know what you're doing in your setting to celebrate; drop us a comment below!

Please note this product is not associated with World Book Day or Andersen Press/David McKee publishers of Elmer.
